Your jewelry should last you a lifetime with proper care.
- Jewelry should be stored separately to prevent
scratches or tangles. Although diamonds are the hardest substance on
earth, one diamond will scratch another.
- When not wearing your rings store them in a soft lined
jewelry case.
- Never wear your rings while doing heavy work.
- Ask a jeweler you trust to clean your jewelry.
- You can clean your jewelry at home yourself with a
commercial jewelry cleaner. Or, use a soft toothbrush to gently clean
the diamond with mild liquid detergent, then rinse under warm running and
pat dry with a soft cloth. Or, soak in a solution of equal parts cold
water and ammonia for thirty minutes, then lift out and rub gently with a
soft toothbrush. Rinse in running water and drain.
- Important, never clean jewelry over an open sink drain
unless it has a drain catch to prevent your valuables from falling down the
drain.
- Bring your jewelry, rings in particular, to a jeweler
every year to check that the setting is secure.
- Many homeowner's and renter's insurance policies
exclude costly jewelry, and none will cover a loss or theft if it occurs
outside your home. Have your jewelry appraised for retail replacement
cost by a qualified jeweler and add to your policy.
